9. While at shoots, make friends with all of the other shoot assistants (assistants to photographers, hair and make up people) and models. Spending nights and weekends doing tests with them is the only way to get photos for your portfolio.
11. Always offer your styling services to your superiors for the small jobs that won't be interesting to them. Eventually they will say yes and let you step in. Then it's up to you to show your talent.
12. Be ready, willing and able on all fronts. Styling is the glamorous part of the job, but not most of it. A stylist is really a glorified schlepper. You run all over town carrying trunks and rolling racks, and it's physically exhausting. You have to really love it to stick with it.
13. If you realize early on that it's not as glam as you thought, move on. I always like to point out to my favorite interns that you don't have to work in fashion to love fashion. You can be the most fashionable doctor or architect of all time.
14. If you are lucky enough to make a living as a stylist, enjoy it. I have. Traveling the world, dressing celebrities, has taken me far beyond my wildest imaginations. As an assistant, I used to sit staring at the beach in Bahia, looking up at skyscrapers in Toyko and running through the markets of Marrakech reminding myself that although exhausted, my life was pretty extraordinary.
